1-Day Dunes Trail and discover Ohiwa Harbour

Motu Trails has no shortage of Accommodation Partners – for example, you could choose from Opotiki Holiday Park, Oasis Backpackers, Bush to Bay Holiday Stays, Island View Holiday Park or the Ohiwa Beach Tasman Holiday Park.

If you don’t have your own bike, hire one from the Ōpōtiki isite (07 3153031), and grab some food and drinks for the trail from Kafé Friends (or a pre-cycle caffeine boost with one of their great coffees). Spend the morning cycling the Dunes Trail – most people take a couple of hours to cycle to the eastern end and back. There are plenty of great rest stops along the way, either by the trail or on the beach.

For lunch, head to the Hot Bread Shop Café, where you'll find great options both in the cabinets and cooked to order.

After lunch, drive to Ōhiwa Harbour. Go for a walk in Onekawa Te Mawhai Regional Park, which spans the hills behind Ohiwa Beach Holiday Park and offers tremendous views of the harbour. There are also some magnificent puriri and pohutukawa trees in the forest.

If you’re heading back to Ōpōtiki for the evening, takeaway fish and chips on the beach would be the perfect end to the day.
